Nitrogen Complex: Ammonia & Ammonium Nitrate

Ammonia Plant

Applications of Ammonia

About 80% or more of the ammonia produced is used for fertilizing agricultural crops in the form of aqua ammonia (an aqueous solution of ammonia), ammonium sulphate (NH4)2SO4, ammonium phosphate (NH4)3PO4, ammonium nitrate NH4NO3 and urea CH4N2O. Some anhydrous liquid ammonia is also used directly as a fertiliser.

Ammonia is also used for:

  • Manufacture of nitric acid (HNO3)

  • Manufacture of nylon and other polyamides

  • Refrigerant in household, commercial and industrial refrigeration systems

  • Manufacture of dyes

  • Manufacture of explosives

  • Cleaning solutions

Household ammonia is used as a general purpose cleaner to clean glass, porcelain, stainless steel, and ovens. Solutions of ammonia are used in the fermentation industry.

Antimicrobial agent for food products and animal feed. Because of ammonia’s vaporization properties, it is

a useful refrigerant. Ammonia is used to scrub S02 from the burning of fossil fuels, and the resulting product is converted to ammonium sulphate for use as fertilizer. Ammonia, as the vapour released by smelling salts, has found significant use as a respiratory stimulant. Liquid ammonia is used for treatment of cotton materials, and for pre washing of wool.
