Coal-to-Liquids Plant

The CTL project is planned to be constructed within the Limpopo Eco-Industrial Park (LEIP), which is planned to form the anchor project of the Musina SEZ.

The CTL project is anticipated to start production by 2019, and will require approximately 2.8 to 3 million tons per annum (tpa) of thermal coal as feedstock for a first train of 20,000 barrels per day (bbl/day) plant, which will be expanded by a second train of 20,000 bbl/day. Bituminous or thermal coal is approximately of the same calorific value as the thermal coal that is used in typical power plants in South Africa, and will be sourced from local coal mines in northern Limpopo. The major coalfields in close proximity to Musina are the Thuli (west of Musina), Pafuri (south-east of Musina) and the Tshipise (south-west of Musina) coalfields.
